Make no mistake: the finest export from the north since Yorkshire Tea, Marmozets are back.
There were many of us — including the band themselves — who doubted we’d ever see Becca Bottomley (vocals), Jack Bottomley (guitar), Sam Macintyre (guitar), and Josh Macintyre (drums) again. It’s been seven long years, but just as life gets in the way, “life finds a way” — Dr Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park.
A band that burned hotter than the sun between 2014 and 2018, Marmozets 2.0 have that fire back in their bellies. A nine-date tour, which has just concluded, sold out before the ink was dry on the tickets. Three explosive new singles, with the latest, “New York”, dropping just last week. And a new album, CO.WAR.DICE, set to land in May.
It would be easy, after such a long hiatus, for a band to fade into obscurity. But looking around the sold-out venue, it becomes obvious that Marmozets’ time away hasn’t dampened their fans’ appetite to see one of the best live acts around — it’s merely fed a craving. A craving shared by two distinct generations: those who fell in love with the band back in 2014, and a brand-new wave of younger fans now experiencing Marmozets live for the first time. The generations quickly merged into a frothing mass of limbs as the band proved they have lost none of their explosivity.
New tracks such as “You Want The Truth” blend seamlessly with classics like “Particle”. Becca prowls the stage with all the venom that identified her more than a decade ago as one of the finest in her craft. Jack and Sam grin ear to ear as they interact with the crowd, while Josh manically drives everything forward from the back with his trademark showmanship.
This tour — these new tunes — have given the UK one of its top-tier live acts back. And the brilliance from Bingley must surely be feeling that the love for them hasn’t faded — it’s only grown stronger.
